Description

R-Type is set in the 22nd century, and the player flies a futuristic fighter craft called the R-9a “Arrowhead”, named for its shape, and because it is the ninth model in the ‘R’ series of fighter craft (but it is the first of the series to actually be used in combat; the previous models were all prototypes). The mission is to ‘blast off and strike the evil Bydo Empire’. The significance of the R- in the series title refers to the production code as well as the term of endearment for the player fighter craft, the “Round Canopy”.

R-Type

Overview & History

Developed by Irem and released to Japanese arcades in June 1987, R-Type redefined the side-scrolling shoot 'em up genre with its biomechanical aesthetic heavily inspired by H.R. Giger. The storyline thrusts players into the cockpit of the R-9 "Arrowhead" fighter craft, tasked with launching a desperate, one-ship suicide mission into the heart of the Bydo Empire—a grotesque, organic-technological race bent on the absolute annihilation of human civilization. Utilizing Irem's proprietary M72 hardware, the game stunned audiences with its massive, screen-filling sprite scaling, haunting industrial soundscape, and an oppressive, claustrophobic atmosphere. Its immense difficulty and unforgettable boss designs, particularly the iconic first-stage boss Dobkeratops, cemented R-Type as a legendary benchmark of arcade gaming, spawning numerous ports and sequels.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

At the core of R-Type’s tactical gameplay is the revolutionary Force pod—a glowing, indestructible modular sphere that can be attached to the front or rear of the R-9, or detached entirely to fight independently. Acquiring power-ups transforms the Force, enabling it to absorb enemy bullet fire and unleash devastating defensive firepower. Additionally, holding down the attack button charges the R-9’s main cannon into a powerful Wave Cannon blast. Players must strategically navigate labyrinthine stages, deploying the Force to shield blind spots and masterfully positioning it in tight corridors where the Arrowhead cannot fit. Success requires precise memorization of enemy wave spawn patterns, as reactive play alone leads to swift destruction.
