Final Fight

Overview & History

Released by Capcom in 1989, Final Fight was originally conceived as a sequel to the original Street Fighter under the working title Street Fighter '89. Instead, Capcom pivoted it into a genre-defining side-scrolling beat-'em-up that set the gold standard for the arcade medium. Set in the crime-riddled fictional metropolis of Metro City, the storyline kicks off when the nefarious Mad Gear gang, led by the corrupt Mayor Belger, kidnaps Jessica, the daughter of newly elected Mayor Mike Haggar. Refusing to bow to criminal extortion, Haggar recruits Cody (Jessica's boyfriend) and Guy (Cody's ninja best friend) to wage a one-way war across six distinct urban districts, battling through swarms of thugs to reclaim the city and rescue Jessica.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Running on Capcom’s legendary CPS-1 arcade hardware, Final Fight introduced sprite work of unprecedented size and detail, accompanied by a gritty, synth-driven soundtrack that captured the urban decay of the late 1980s. Players choose from three distinct fighters: Mike Haggar is the quintessential heavy-hitting grappler who can execute devastating piledrivers and suplexes; Cody is a balanced all-rounder equipped with a lethal knife-combining combo; and Guy is a swift, agile martial artist capable of wall-jumping. The core gameplay loop relies on managing crowds from both sides of the screen, utilizing environmental hazards, and smashing destructible barrels to collect food items for health and scattered melee weapons like lead pipes, katanas, and pneumatic drills. Boss encounters at the end of each stage—ranging from the flamboyant poison-user Poison to the towering powerhouse Andore—require precise spatial awareness and timing to overcome.
