Ghosts ‘n Goblins is a platform game where the player controls a knight, named Sir Arthur, who must defeat zombies, ogres, demons, armored giants, dragons, and other undead creatures in order to rescue Princess Prin Prin, who has been kidnapped by Satan, King of Demon World. Along the way the player can pick up new weapons, bonuses and extra suits of armor that can help in this task.

Ghosts'n Goblins

Overview & History

Released by Capcom in 1985 and designed by Tokuro Fujiwara, Ghosts'n Goblins (known as Makaimura in Japan) is a legendary run-and-gun platformer renowned for its punishing difficulty and atmospheric, gothic-fantasy aesthetic. The storyline kicks off with the valiant knight Arthur enjoying a romantic rendezvous in the moonlight with Princess Prin-Prin, before the wicked demon king Satan swoops down, abducts the princess, and whisks her away to the Demon World. Arthur immediately dons his silver armor, arms himself with a trusty lance, and sets off on a perilous quest through graveyards, haunted forests, and icy caverns to rescue her. Originally captivating arcade-goers with its quarter-munching challenge, the game achieved massive commercial success and spawned a sprawling franchise, cementing its legacy as a pillar of retro gaming culture.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players guide Arthur through six distinct, increasingly brutal levels filled with zombies, flying red arreymers, and towering cyclops bosses. The game’s defining mechanic is its health system tied to Arthur's armor: taking a single hit strips Arthur down to his polka-dot boxer shorts, leaving him vulnerable to instant death upon taking a second blow. Along the way, players can collect weapon upgrades—ranging from the standard lance to daggers, torches, shields, and axes—each with unique trajectories and firing speeds. To achieve true victory, players must not only beat the game once but play through the entire terrifying second loop to unlock the final boss and true ending.
