Description

The object of the game is to rescue the five hostages in the concentration camp. The game is divided into six stages: Communication Setup, Jungle, Village, Powder Magazine, Concentration Camp, and Airport. Completion of each stage advances the story. For example, upon completing the Jungle stage, an enemy leader is interrogated and the location of the enemy’s concentration camp is found. This was one of the first shooter games to feature a storyline, and it had some similarities to real special operations missions.

Operation Wolf

Overview & History

Released by Taito in 1987 and designed by Akira Sato, Operation Wolf is a seminal light-gun rail shooter that defined the military action genre in arcades. Set during the Cold War, the storyline follows Roy Adams, a green beret operative on a perilous solo rescue mission behind enemy lines to liberate five American prisoners of war held in a hostile South American nation. Taito's cabinet stood out immediately in arcades by featuring a heavy, rack-mounted Uzi submachine gun tethered to the machine, offering authentic tactile feedback that simulated actual recoil. It was later ported to numerous home computers and consoles, but the arcade original remains the definitive, adrenaline-fueled experience.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players traverse six distinct stages—ranging from a jungle and village to a heavily guarded concentration camp—moving automatically from left to right while the screen scrolls dynamically. The HUD displays vital survival metrics: a health gauge, a limited inventory of grenades, and an ammunition counter. To survive the relentless onslaught of hostile infantry, knife-wielding commandos, attack dogs, armed jeeps, and assault helicopters, players must manage their ammo reserves by shooting crates for extra magazines. Special items like energy-boosting health drinks and strategic time-freezing dynamite are also scattered across the environment. Shooting civilians instantly drains the player's health, forcing precise trigger discipline amid the chaos.
