Description

In a distant part of the universe, an alien creature called Zelos was born. As he grew so did his appetite, and soon he began devouring galaxies, planets, and stars by the hundreds. Now your planet has appeared in Zelos’ path, and it is up to you and a partner to fly into battle to save your world. Life Force is an action packed shooter based on the arcade game. There are six levels which alternate between side and vertical scrolling, each of them ending with a powerful guardian. Throughout the game, destroying certain enemies will release power ups which can be used to equip your ship with more powerful weapons, extra speed, and shields.

Life Force

Overview & History

Released by Konami in 1986 as an arcade spin-off of their iconic *Gradius* franchise, *Life Force* (known as *Salamander* in Japan) takes players on a visceral, biomorphic journey inside a massive alien entity known as Bacterion. Moving away from the mechanical space settings of its predecessor, this vertical and horizontal scrolling shoot-'em-up introduces a deeply organic, fleshy aesthetic where pulsing arterial walls, skeletal remains, and giant biological horrors make up the labyrinthine terrain. The game was groundbreaking for its era, alternating between traditional side-scrolling stages and intense vertical-scrolling levels that tested spatial awareness and weapon management.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike *Gradius*, *Life Force* abandons the traditional power-up meter in favor of the classic power capsule collection system. Destroying specific formation enemies releases capsules that players allocate instantly to upgrade their ship—the Vic Viper or the Lord British—enhancing speed, adding missiles, deploying double shots, generating laser beams, activating options (shadow drones), or equipping a protective force field. A notable feature is its cooperative two-player simultaneous mode, allowing friends to blast through organic caverns together. Players must constantly balance aggressive firepower with defensive positioning, dodging homing bio-missiles, pulsating cell clusters, and screen-filling boss monsters like the skeletal dragon Gergoth. Survival demands precise micro-movements through shifting biomass and dynamic environmental hazards.
