Overview & History

Released by Bally Midway in 1986, Rampage is a seminal arcade classic that brilliantly subverts traditional hero tropes by casting players as the giant movie monsters destroying a metropolis rather than defending it. Developed by Midway's secretive design team featuring Brian Colin and Jeff Nauman, the game was conceived as a satirical take on classic monster cinema like King Kong and Godzilla. Utilizing a unique side-scrolling perspective divided across multiple stages, the arcade cabinet famously supported up to three simultaneous players, turning cooperative destruction into a hilarious, frantic race for points. The storyline centers on three ordinary humans—George, Lizzie, and Ralph—who undergo bizarre mutagenic transformations after consuming experimental vitamins and corporate chemicals, mutating into a colossal gorilla, a towering lizard, and a gigantic werewolf, respectively. As the anti-heroes of the narrative, players must tear their way across North America, obliterating cities from Peoria to Washington D.C., while dodging military resistance.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay revolves around environmental demolition and survival, presented on a continuous multi-story building facade where players scale walls by punching outward. To clear a stage, every single building on the screen must be completely reduced to rubble. Characters possess a suite of destructive moves: punching brickwork shatters windows and exposes terrified citizens who can be grabbed and eaten to replenish health, while leaping kicks demolish ledges. However, destruction comes with hazards. As the monsters wreak havoc, the military responds with relentless waves of police cars, tanks, helicopters, and armed soldiers firing missiles and bullets. Players can retaliate by swatting aircraft out of the sky or throwing household appliances—ranging from toasters to television sets—pulled directly from ransacked apartments. Eating spoiled food or hazardous waste drains health, turning the monster back into its naked human form temporarily, exposing it to embarrassment and further damage until it re-transforms. Between the chaotic property damage, accidental friendly fire in multiplayer, and the race to gorge on civilians, Rampage delivers a chaotic arcade experience defined by gleeful anarchy.
