Klax

Overview & History

Released by Atari Games in 1989, *Klax* is a hypnotic, tile-matching puzzle masterpiece famously marketed with the tagline, "It is the 90s and there is time for Klax." Developed by Dave Akers and Mark Stephen Pierce, the game drops players into a psychedelic, isometric dimension where colored tiles—aptly named Klaxes—slide down a rolling conveyer belt toward a catching paddle at the bottom. Unlike traditional falling-block puzzlers, *Klax* requires spatial dexterity, split-second reflexes, and meticulous forward-planning to survive the increasingly frantic waves.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core objective of *Klax* is to catch falling tiles and drop them into a 5x5 grid bin to create horizontal, vertical, or diagonal rows of three matching colors, known as "Klaxes." Creating a match clears the tiles and awards points. Players can hold up to five tiles on their paddle at once, but throwing a tile back up the conveyor belt is permitted when the bin gets dangerously overcrowded. Each of the 100 waves introduces unique win conditions, such as catching a specific number of tiles, surviving without letting the bin overflow, or forming designated patterns like diagonals and alternating color sequences. Bonus tiles, such as the wild-card Jade Klax, add layers of strategic depth, while dropping too many tiles results in an immediate game over.

Keyboard Controls

  • Action Keys: Drop tile into the bin (Down), or flip/throw tile back up the conveyor (Up)
