A vertical shoot ’em up developed by Toaplan.

The player starts out with an automatic laser rifle that fires in whichever of the eight directions the player is moving. By picking up C icons, the player can switch between this and a more powerful spread gun that only fires upwards. An energy bar that depletes over time is present in the upper left corner of the screen. When it runs out the player character’s movement slows down for a couple of seconds, after which he dies. Energy is refilled by picking up E icons. P icons dropped by certain enemies power up the player’s shot.

Overview & History

Released by Toaplan in 1990, Out Zone is a blistering, sci-fi vertical run-and-gun arcade masterpiece directed by Tatsuya Uemura. Set in the distant future of the 22nd century, the storyline thrusts players into a desperate mission across a heavily fortified space colony overrun by mechanical extraterrestrial invaders. Unlike Toaplan’s previous horizontal shmups, this title adopted an overhead perspective reminiscent of Ikari Warriors, yet infused it with the unrelenting bullet-hell pacing that would cement the developer's legendary status. Visually, the game stands out with its gritty, industrial-rust aesthetics, highly detailed biomechanical sprite designs, and an unforgettable, pulse-pounding electronic soundtrack composed by Tatsuya Uemura. Its notorious difficulty level, coupled with a draining timer mechanic, made it a brutal coin-eater in arcades, while leaving an indelible influence on the modern bullet-hell genre.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Out Zone abandons traditional lives in favor of an innovative energy bar that constantly ticks down, forcing players to aggressively advance and collect floating 'E' capsules dropped by destroyed enemies. The game features an asynchronous two-player cooperative mode where players control biomechanical cyborg mercenaries—famously resembling retro sci-fi heroes. You can acquire powerful directional weapon upgrades, including piercing lasers, sweeping fire, and devastating homing missiles, alongside smart bombs that clear the screen of minor foes. A standout mechanic is the rolling dodge move, which grants temporary invulnerability to slip through dense patterns of incoming enemy fire. Fast-paced scrolling, vertically shifting parallax backgrounds, and screen-filling mechanical bosses test your reflexes to their absolute limits.
