X-Men vs. Street Fighter

Overview & History

Released by Capcom in 1996 for the CP System II arcade hardware, X-Men vs. Street Fighter revolutionized the fighting game genre by pioneering the tag-team crossover format. Merging the mutant roster of Capcom's previous X-Men: Children of the Atom with the iconic world warriors of Street Fighter Alpha, the game set the foundation for the entire Marvel vs. Capcom franchise. While there is no traditional storyline aside from a dream-match crossover premise, the ultimate boss battle pits players against a colossal, cybernetic iteration of Apocalypse. The title later saw home ports, most notably for the Sega Saturn and PlayStation, though the PlayStation version famously had to omit simultaneous tag-teaming due to RAM limitations, replacing partners with a temporary assist call instead.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game is celebrated for its blistering, high-octane pacing, introducing the "Variable Attack" system that lets players hot-swap between two chosen fighters mid-combo on the fly. Players can execute dizzying multi-hit juggles, super jumps, and screen-filling "Hyper Combos" by expending super meter levels. If one character is knocked out, the surviving partner immediately jumps in without a round reset, keeping the momentum relentless. Standout character moves include Ryu's fiery Hadoukens paired with Cyclops's sweeping Optic Blasts, and Wolverine's furious Berserker Barrage. A notorious secret code at the character select screen even allowed players to select "Variable Cross," letting both fighters attack simultaneously for a devastating few seconds.
