Description
Two men face off against each other in martial arts matches held on streets in five different countries. The winner of two out of three rounds moves on to the next stage. Bonus stages enable the player to earn more points.
Street Fighter, designed by Takashi Nishiyama and Hiroshi Matsumoto, made its debut in the arcades in 1987. In this game, the player takes control of martial artist Ryu, who competes in a worldwide martial arts tournament, spanning five countries and 20 opponents. A second player can join in at any time and take control of Ryu’s rival, Ken.
The player can perform three types of punch and kick attacks, each varying in speed and strength, and three special attacks: the Hadouken, Shoryuken, and Tatsumaki Senpukyaku. These are performed by executing special button combinations with the controls.

Overview & History
Released by Capcom in August 1987, the original Street Fighter laid the foundational blueprint for the entire one-on-one fighting game genre. Conceived by Takashi Nishiyama and Hiroshi Matsumoto, this arcade cabinet introduced players to a globe-trotting tournament spanning five countries—Japan, the USA, China, the UK, and Thailand. The overarching storyline follows martial arts master Ryu as he seeks to test his skills against elite fighters worldwide, ultimately facing the ruthless Muay Thai champion and final boss, Sagat. Originally, the cabinet was famous for its pneumatic pressure-sensitive pads, which required players to strike hard for heavier attacks, though this was quickly replaced by standard six-button layouts due to reliability issues. Despite its clunky collision detection and stiffness compared to its legendary 1991 sequel, this pioneering title established the iconic roster archetypes and competitive DNA that would conquer the global arcade scene.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
The gameplay revolves around best-of-three round matches fought against a computer-controlled opponent or a second player. Players exclusively control Ryu (or Player 2 controls his martial arts rival, Ken) through the single-player campaign, while CPU opponents cycle through various nationalities and fighting styles, including bird-masked ninja Geki and deadly assassin Gen. The defining mechanical breakthrough of the game was the introduction of special moves executed via specific joystick motions combined with attack buttons. Players could unleash the fiery Hadoken projectile, the rising Dragon Punch (Shoryuken), and the spinning Hurricane Kick (Tatsumaki Senpukyaku), moves that demanded precise execution and forever changed arcade game design.
