Description

Four new characters, Cammy, Fei Long, Dee Jay, and T. Hawk, have been added to the previous list of characters from this series. Also, the graphics and sound have been improved over the earlier versions.

It is the fourth game in the Street Fighter II sub-series of Street Fighter games, following Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting. In addition to refining and balancing the existing character roster from the previous installments, Super Street Fighter II also introduced four new characters. It was also the first game to be developed on Capcom ’s CP System II hardware, which permitted more sophisticated graphics and audio over the original CP System hardware, used by the previous versions of Street Fighter II.

Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers

Overview & History

Released by Capcom in September 1993, Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers revolutionized the coin-op fighting genre by shifting from the CP System to the advanced CP System II (CPS-2) hardware. This upgrade delivered dramatically enhanced audio fidelity, crisp sprite artwork, and four iconic newcomers—Cammy, T. Hawk, Fei Long, and Dee Jay—joining the original World Warriors. Set against the backdrop of the global Shadaloo criminal syndicate tournament orchestrated by the dictator M. Bison, fighters traverse the globe to test their martial arts supremacy. The narrative deepens individual character arcs, revealing Ken's friendly rivalry, Ryu's wandering path of self-discovery, and Guile's relentless pursuit of vengeance for his fallen comrade Charlie, culminating in brutal showdowns against grand masters Sagat, Vega, Balrog, and Bison.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

This iteration introduced the revolutionary "Combo" system, tracking and rewarding players with visual and auditory feedback for consecutive, unbroken hits. It also pioneered simultaneous secret character select screens and refined the game speed. Combat mechanics demand precise execution of joystick motions and button timing. Classic attacks range from Ryu's legendary *Hadoken* (fireball) and *Shoryuken* (dragon punch) to Guile's formidable *Sonic Boom* and *Flash Kick*. Newcomers bring fresh tactical layers, such as Cammy’s agile *Spiral Arrow*, T. Hawk’s devastating *Condor Dive*, Fei Long’s rapid-fire *Rekka Kicks*, and Dee Jay’s rhythmic *Machine Gun Upper*. The six-button arcade layout (three punches, three kicks) allows for intricate zoning, high-low mix-ups, cross-up aerial assaults, and frame-tight reversals.
