Arabian is a “Video book” with a happy ending. The attract mode introduces the story, and animated storybook “pages” let you experience the Arabian Prince’s adventures. Use the 8-way joystick to jump, super-jump, walk, crawl or climb in all directions. Tap the Kick button to boot your enemies out of the way.

The player controls a young Arabian Prince who must rescue his Princess from the castle tower where she is being held prisoner. Evil Genies in brass jugs that throw deadly smokeballs, swooping Rocs and purple ghostly creatures called Oscars will try to stop the hero along the way. Sometimes Rocs and Oscars will come together to form Super Rocs or Super Oscars who will be more dangerous, but these enemies are also worth a greater amount of points.

The Prince scores points for kicking Oscars or Rocs, picking up lettered jugs and spelling A-R-A-B-I-A-N. When The Prince picks up the jugs, he must only pick one up while a Genie is still inside or when a Genie is beginning to materialize. The Prince must not pick up a jug while a Genie is above it and fully-materialized or else he will die. The Prince loses a life when he gets hit by a smokeball thrown by a Genie, falls off either a ledge, flying carpet or vine, or gets caught touched by a Genie, Oscar, or Roc.

Released in 1983 by Sun Electronics, Arabian (also known as Super Arabian) is a visually vibrant, platform-action arcade classic loosely inspired by the timeless tales of One Thousand and One Nights. Players assume the role of a brave young prince on a quest to rescue a captive princess from an evil palace. Across four distinct, looping stages—ranging from magical desert landscapes to the interior of a treasure-filled palace—the prince must collect all four glowing Arabic letters in each level to piece together a message and complete the rescue. The game stands out for its whimsical Middle Eastern aesthetic, distinct bouncing movement physics, and upbeat, chiptune soundtrack that captures the exotic atmosphere of a storybook adventure.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard platformers of its era, Arabian features a unique vertical and horizontal wrapping mechanic where walking off the edge of one screen seamlessly transports the prince to the opposite side. The protagonist cannot jump traditionally; instead, he relies on a distinctive somersault attack to dispatch whimsical enemies like flying carpets, genies, and scorpions. Players can also utilize magic carpets for swift aerial transit and kick various items across the screen to crush approaching foes. Mastering the timing of the somersault is crucial, as landing directly on enemies is the primary method of survival while navigating the treacherous, scrolling platforms.
