Red Earth

Overview & History

Released by Capcom in 1996 for the CP System III arcade hardware, Red Earth (known in Japan as War-Zard) is a dark fantasy fighting game that uniquely blended traditional arcade 1v1 mechanics with light role-playing game progression. Set in a mythological, post-apocalyptic version of Earth in the year 2099—where mystical beasts and sorcerers have emerged from hiding—the game tells the epic tale of four chosen heroes fighting to reclaim the world. Unlike standard arcade fighters, Red Earth featured a persistent single-player campaign where your chosen character retained experience points, gained levels, unlocked new command moves, and even picked up passwords to save their progress across arcade sessions. The roster featured four distinct protagonists: Leo, a cursed lion-man king; Kenji, a master ninja tengu; Hauzer-fighting martial artist Tessa; and the robust dwarven warrior Giotto.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Red Earth breaks the mold by pitting the player exclusively against a gauntlet of massive, screen-filling bosses rather than mirror matches against standard human opponents. Each of the towering foes—ranging from the multi-phase dragon Hauzer to the colossal kraken Scion—possesses multiple health bars, aggressive pattern-based AI, and screen-clearing super attacks. To survive, players must master a dynamic six-button layout (three punches, three kicks), tactical blocking, and complex command inputs. Furthermore, the RPG mechanics mean players earn experience points from successful hits and boss defeats, increasing their maximum health and granting devastating new special moves as they progress. The game also incorporates a unique item shop system between matches and secret finishing moves known as "Tiger/Dragon" attacks.
