Strider

Overview & History

Released by Capcom in 1989, Strider is a groundbreaking side-scrolling platformer conceptualized by Moto Kikuta and powered by Capcom's CP System hardware. Set in a dystopian future year of 2048, the storyline follows Hiryu, the youngest-ever Class A member of an elite group of ninja-like mercenaries known as Striders. Tasked by the Earth's leaders to assassinate the tyrannical Grandmaster Meio, Hiryu infiltrates heavily guarded futuristic strongholds ranging from the snowy wastes of Siberia to the gravity-defying interior of the Third Moon. The game gained legendary status for its frantic pace, incredible sprite scaling, and heavily anime-inspired cyberpunk aesthetic, eventually inspiring numerous console ports and a full-fledged 3D revival decades later.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Strider distinguishes itself through hyper-acrobatic movement and relentless enemy onslaughts. Players control Hiryu as he wields the "Cypher," a plasma-generating blade that can slice through robotic sentries, mutant beasts, and armored soldiers from various angles. Unlike traditional platformers, Hiryu’s mobility is unmatched: he can scale almost any vertical wall, hang upside down from magnetic ceilings, perform athletic backflips, and slide under incoming gunfire. The game utilizes a power-up system driven by robotic options that orbit Hiryu, granting temporary boosts like a plasma shield, an artificial tiger companion, or a devastating firebird projectile. Boss encounters are iconic tests of reflexes, featuring massive, multi-screen sprites that demand precise timing and aggressive offensive positioning.
