Varth: Operation Thunderstorm was produced by Capcom in 1992.

A vertically scrolling shooter with planes and other ships to destroy. The game progresses through several levels, many of which are based in standard cities. Earn lives and power-ups by shooting down enemies.Varth follows the story of a disaster that befalls a human colony on a planet of the same name. The entire colony is run by a 7th generation supercomputer which controls the operations of all machinery on the planet. Unfortunately for the residents of Varth, Delta-7 has been possessed by the entity “DUO” (Dimension Unbody Offender), thought of as an evil spirit but actually a temporal-spatial consciousness which spontaneously arose within the supercomputer. DUO has come to the conclusion that human existence is inimical to the planet, and has therefore turned the planet’s defenses against its own populace. Eighty percent of the planet is laid waste by the event, and this is only the beginning of DUO’s cleansing scheme. The colonists’ reliance on the supercomputer has caused them to lose the ability to take care of themselves, and thus have no means of fighting back. The only hope for the colony lies in the pilots of two planes equipped with 4th generation computers which DUO cannot control—they are controlled not by machinery, but by humans.

Released by Capcom in 1992 on the CP System arcade hardware, Varth: Operation Thunderstorm is a quintessential vertically scrolling shoot-'em-up that casts players into a gritty, techno-organic war against the sentient supercomputer DUO. After a bioweapon disaster devastates Earth, humanity flees to the space colony Varth, only to be dragged back into conflict when DUO takes over the planet's orbital defense network. Piloting advanced fighter craft—the agile Saber or the heavy-hitting Cybuster—players embark on a grueling 30-stage campaign to reclaim their homeworld. Unlike Capcom's more whimsical shooters, Varth adopts a metallic, industrial aesthetic with stark, apocalyptic backdrops that emphasize the grim nature of its sci-fi rebellion.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Varth breaks away from standard power-up tropes by introducing a unique pod system. Players collect Red, Blue, or Yellow crystals that attach orbiting options to their ship, each delivering distinct firepower: tracking lasers, wide spreads, or devastating forward blasters. Additionally, players can unleash screen-clearing bombs known as "smart bombs" that deploy massive energy explosions. A standout mechanic is the tactical use of the "Retreat" option—holding down the attack button charges a powerful rear-facing shot. The game also features a dynamic scoring system where rescuing floating escape pods grants vital point multipliers and restorative items, rewarding aggressive yet precise dodging through bullet-hell formations.
