Description

Willow is a platform game based on the 1988 film of the same name. It was developed by Capcom and released as an arcade and a NES game in 1989.

This is a scrolling adventure game following the plot of the Lucasfilm movie “Willow.” As Willow, or Madmartigan or both, the players work their way through various stages, defeating numerous enemies and facing a large “boss” at the end of each stage ending with defeating Bavmorda, the evil antagonist from the movie.

The evil witch queen Bavmorda is after the holy baby of the lands, Elora Danan, intent on destroying her. A young peaceful wizard called Willow Ufgood was selected to protect Elora. Later on, a brave warrior named Madmartigan joins Willow to fight the enemy rival General Kael.

Willow

Overview & History

Released by Capcom in 1989, Willow is a classic arcade platformer loosely based on the George Lucas fantasy film. Unlike its platform-exclusive console counterparts, the arcade iteration leans heavily into fast-paced hack-and-slash action mixed with light RPG elements. Players step into the shoes of the reluctant hero Willow Ufgood or the stoic swordsman Madmartigan as they embark on a perilous quest to defeat the evil Queen Bavmorda and protect the sacred infant, Elora Danan, from dark forces.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game unfolds across six diverse stages, ranging from enchanted forests and frozen caverns to the foreboding Nockmaar Castle. As players progress, they collect magical potions, shields, and mystical scrolls that upgrade their primary attacks into devastating elemental projectiles. Defeating specific enemies yields experience points, allowing characters to level up their health and offensive capabilities organically. Boss encounters at the end of each stage demand precise positioning and timing, faithfully capturing the epic cinematic scale of the source material.
