Description

The hands of Bashtar have whisked Moho away from her beloved Toki. Toki hasn’t fared much better as he has been transformed into an ape by the sorcerer Vookimedlo. Now Toki must rescue his love and find a way to transform himself back into a man.

Toki consists of six stages which are The Labyrinth of Caves, the underwater stage Lake Neptune, Caverns of Fire, Ice Palace, Dark Jungle, and the Golden Palace. Toki’s main attack against his enemies is by spitting at them although he can also hop on them to defeat them. Toki’s normal spit can be changed to a fire breath by finding the correct item. Other items include items like a football helmet which temporarily shields Toki, high jump shoes, clocks that add time, coins which add to Toki’s life count, and fruits which add to the total score.

Toki

Overview & History

Released by TAD Corporation in 1989, Toki (also known in Japan as JuJu Densetsu) is a uniquely charming and notoriously challenging arcade platformer. Developed by former members of Data East, the game follows the surreal and tragic tale of Toki, a peaceful jungle king whose beloved sweetheart, Mithmi, is abducted by the vile voodoo sorcerer Vookimedlo. To make matters worse, the evil wizard transforms Toki into a helpless, saliva-spitting ape. Armed only with his powerful primate lungs and indomitable spirit, Toki must traverse treacherous, monster-filled landscapes—ranging from the subterranean Labyrinth of Caves to the perilous Palace of Ice—to defeat Vookimedlo's monstrous minions, rescue Mithmi, and restore his true human form.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Toki stands out from standard 80s arcade shooters due to its distinct vertical and horizontal platforming combined with relentless projectile combat. As the ape Toki, players cannot wield traditional weapons; instead, Toki launches lethal, bouncy spit-balls directly from his mouth. Throughout the game’s six intricately designed stages, players can collect mystical power-ups that dramatically alter Toki's offensive capabilities. Helmets provide temporary invulnerability against hazards, while specialized fireballs, flame wheels, and laser projectiles replace standard bubbles to decimate screen-filling bosses like the giant amphibious creature Boloruges and the fiery demon Bashtar. Movement is deliberate and weighty, requiring precise timing for jumps to avoid bottomless pits, crushing traps, and enemy ambushes. Air control is limited, meaning every leap must be calculated with absolute precision.
