Description

You are a barbarian who must slay three dragons that descended from the skies and plunged the kingdom into darkness. You must go through several areas, destroying monsters that get in your way. Along the way, you will come across old men, which when rescued, will give you a range of items that include extra time, more vitality, or more coins, or they might sell you items, including armor upgrades, weapons, keys for treasure chests, anti-poisoning potions. But, as always, you need to collect coins, which can be obtained by destroying certain monsters or breaking a series of pots.

Released by Capcom in 1987, *Black Tiger* (known as *Black Dragon* in Japan) is a dark fantasy coin-op arcade classic that plunges players into a dystopian, monster-infested medieval kingdom. You assume the role of a stalwart barbarian hero on a perilous quest to overthrow three tyrannical dragons who have enslaved the realm and kidnapped the king. Unlike brightly colored platformers of its era, *Black Tiger* is defined by its brooding, atmospheric pixel art, featuring decaying dungeons, subterranean caverns, and brooding, horned monstrosities.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

This side-scrolling action-platformer is notorious for its grueling difficulty and distinct survival mechanics. As you traverse vertical and horizontal stages, you must constantly rescue captive old men who reward you with Zenny (the in-game currency), crucial keys, and poison antidotes. Zenny is vital; it is used at wandering shops to upgrade your weapons, purchase sturdier armor, and acquire life-saving magic spells. Your barbarian begins armed with a basic iron ball-and-chain, but can collect armor upgrades that physically alter his sprite, transforming him from a bare-chested warrior into a heavily armored juggernaut. Platforming precision is paramount, as you leap across crumbling ledges while fighting off swarms of bats, skeleton warriors, and fire-breathing lizards, all while racing against a relentless countdown timer.
