Description

Space Harrier is set in the “Fantasy Zone”, a surreal world composed of bright colors and a checkerboard-styled ground. The enemies are also unique, featuring prehistoric animals, Chinese dragons, and alien pods. The player is forced along the levels, running or flying around enemy fire, while shooting back with fireballs via the character’s under-arm cannon (which doubles as a rocket-esque device allowing the character to fly).

Space Harrier

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1985 and masterminded by industry legend Yu Suzuki, Space Harrier is a pioneering third-person rail shooter that revolutionized arcade cabinets with its hydraulic, sit-down motion cabinet and vibrant, scaled-sprite graphics. Set in the surreal, checkerboard-patterned fantasy world of the Land of the Dragons (Fantasy Zone), the storyline casts players as the nameless, jet-propelled "Space Harrier" psychic hero. Armed with a formidable multi-directional laser cannon, your solitary mission is to liberate this vibrant, psychedelic realm from an alien invasion commanded by the evil one-eyed mammoth, IDA, and his bizarre menagerie of robotic dragons, floating stone heads, and monolithic biomechanical bosses across eighteen wildly distinct, fast-paced stages.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Operating from a constant forward-scrolling perspective just behind the protagonist's back, Space Harrier demands rapid reflexes and constant spatial awareness. Players do not have the luxury of stopping or controlling their forward speed; instead, you must frantically dodge incoming projectile fire, destructible terrain obstacles, and aggressive enemies charging straight out of the screen. The protagonist has a standard directional control setup combined with a rapid-fire laser attack capable of disintegrating both organic and mechanical threats. Uniquely for its era, the game features distinct bonus stages where Harrier mounts a friendly, invincible white dragon named Uriah, smashing completely through obstacles for extra points without fear of damage. The game's iconic, synthetic speech synthesizer—famously shouting "Welcome to the Fantasy Zone!" and "Get ready!"—cements its legendary status in arcade history.
