Description

Frogger is an arcade game introduced in 1981. It was developed by Konami, and licensed for worldwide distribution by Sega/Gremlin. The object of the game is to direct frogs to their homes one by one. To do this, each frog must avoid cars while crossing a busy road and navigate a river full of hazards. Skillful players may obtain some bonuses along the way. The game is regarded as a classic from the golden age of video arcade games and was noted for its novel gameplay and theme. It was also an early example of a game using more than one CPU, as it used two Z80 processors.

Frogger

Overview & History

Released by Konami and distributed by Sega in 1981, Frogger emerged as a defining masterpiece of the golden age of arcade gaming. Created by programmer Akira Hashimoto, the game departs from the aggressive space-shooter tropes of its era, introducing a charming, frantic race against time and nature. The storyline is deceptively simple: a lone amphibian must navigate a treacherous, bustling highway and a perilous river to safely guide its offspring into one of five stagnant home slots at the top of the screen. Its vibrant, cartoonish cabinet artwork and memorable chip-tune soundtrack—featuring snippets of "Yankee Doodle" and Japanese folk tunes—made it an instant cultural touchstone. Frogger achieved massive commercial success, spawning countless sequels, merchandise, and enduring pop-culture ubiquity.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay loop of Frogger is divided into two distinct, progressively difficult stages. The lower half of the screen presents a multi-lane highway crawling with an array of speeding vehicles, from sedans and race cars to deadly bulldozers. The upper half transitions to a raging river populated by floating logs, swimming turtles that occasionally submerge, and treacherous hazards like snapping crocodiles and lethal water snakes. Players must precisely time every single hop within a strict 30-second countdown timer. Adding layers of emergent strategy, players can rescue a drowning female frog or capture bonus flies to earn extra points before depositing their charge safely into a home slot. Once all five slots are filled, the difficulty ramps up with faster obstacles and reduced reaction windows.
