Description

As the story goes, three years have passed since this game’s prequel. Now the Knight Arthur must fight against the true king of the Demon World, Lucifer, who has taken many souls including that of Arthur’s beloved Princess Prin Prin.

The gameplay for Ghouls n’ Ghosts is eerily similar to that of Ghosts ‘n Goblins. The player controls the knight Arthur, who must advance through a series of spooky levels and defeat a number of undead and demonic creatures in his quest to restore souls stolen by Lucifer, including the soul of his bride, Princess Guinevere. Along the way, Arthur can pick up a variety of weapons and armor to help him in his quest.

It is the sequel to Ghosts’n Goblins and the second game in the Ghosts’n Goblins series.

Ghouls'n Ghosts

Overview & History

Released by Capcom in 1988 as the direct arcade sequel to the notorious 1985 platformer Ghosts 'n Goblins, Ghouls'n Ghosts refined the gothic-horror formula with breathtaking, hand-drawn 16-bit sprite art, a sweeping orchestral fantasy soundtrack by Kozue Ishikawa, and punishingly fair progression. The storyline once again follows the valiant knight Sir Arthur, who must venture through the terrifying Demon World to rescue the soul of Princess Prin-Prin from the wicked ruler Lucifer (known as Samael in localized versions). Powered by Capcom's sophisticated CP System (CPS-1) hardware, the game introduced vibrant, shifting backgrounds, massive grotesque bosses like the giant cyclops Otarogue, and a distinctive armor-sharding mechanic where taking a single hit strips Arthur down to his polka-dot boxer shorts.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike its predecessor, Ghouls'n Ghosts dramatically expands Arthur's offensive repertoire by allowing players to fire both horizontally and vertically—upwards and downwards while airborne. The iconic weapon arsenal receives a massive overhaul, featuring the standard Lance, the bouncy Dagger, the sweeping Scythe, the close-range Torch, and the powerful, charge-enabled Magical Weapons that unleash screen-clearing elemental devastation when players hold down the attack button. Furthermore, the game introduces a dynamic golden chest system; in addition to upgrading or stripping Arthur's armor, opening specific chests spawns a golden wizard who temporarily transforms the knight into a flying duck, an old man, or grants him invincible golden armor. To achieve the true ending and banish Lucifer forever, players are uniquely forced to complete the entire grueling campaign a second time using the mandatory Psycho Cannon weapon.
