Knights of the Round is an arcade game released by Capcom in 1991. A side-scrolling beat ’em up based loosely on the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, the game features an role-playing video game-like level advancement system, with fighters getting new weapons and armour as they advance through the game, however the player can not choose how to upgrade his/her character – the level up system is static.

Released by Capcom in 1991 for the CP System arcade hardware, Knights of the Round is a classic medieval fantasy beat-'em-up that merges Arthurian legend with Capcom's legendary arcade side-scrolling engine. Players embark on a quest to unite Britain by defeating the evil tyrant King Garibaldi and retrieving the Holy Grail. Inspired by traditional arcade titles like Final Fight, this game sets itself apart through a unique leveling system, distinct weapon upgrades, and mounted horseback combat sequences that transport players straight into the chivalric romance of the Round Table.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players choose from three distinct warriors: Arthur, the balanced swordsman wielding Excalibur; Lancelot, the agile knight with rapid spear thrusts; and Perceval, the powerhouse axeman with devastating heavy strikes. As you defeat enemies and progress through the stages, your characters automatically level up, transforming their basic tunics into gleaming suits of plate armor and evolving their weapons into formidable instruments of destruction. Unlike standard brawlers, mastering the game requires utilizing the blocking mechanic—holding the attack button while pushing backward allows you to deflect incoming strikes and set up powerful counter-attacks. Additionally, executing a simultaneous attack and jump triggers a screen-clearing special move at the cost of some health, adding strategic depth to crowd-control situations.
