Michael Jackson's Moonwalker

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1990, the arcade adaptation of Michael Jackson's Moonwalker stands as a brilliantly eccentric beat-'em-up that merges the King of Pop's iconic music video aesthetics with isometric action. Unlike the Genesis/Mega Drive platformer, the arcade version supports up to three simultaneous players, each controlling a differently colored suit-wearing Michael (White, Red, or Blue). The plot loosely mirrors the 1988 film, tasking players with navigating through mob-infested environments like a 1930s Chicago club, a neon-lit cavern, and an enemy stronghold to rescue kidnapped children from the villainous Mr. Big.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game distinguishes itself through rhythmic combat and signature choreography. Instead of standard punches, Michael uses magical projectiles, kicks, and spinning melee attacks that send foes flying. The standout mechanic is the 'Dance Magic' button: pressing it freezes all on-screen enemies and forces them—alongside Michael—into a synchronized dance routine. Once the musical number reaches its climax, a blinding flash wipes out every regular enemy in the area. Collecting shooting stars transforms Michael into a robotic silver suit, granting temporary invulnerability and heavy laser firepower, while rescuing the final child in a stage triggers a cinematic transformation into a sleek sports car.
