You’ll have to outwit his enormous army of bodyguards, gangs of charisma-bypass patients in trench coats, the bullet brain with the build of a rhinoceros and the breath of a dung beetle, packs of vicious canine yappies, the psychotic clown with an evil sense of humor – you’ll die, but not laughing! The there’s the gas-guzzling cadillac jock – a cool specimen, elbow hanging on the door rail, a serious looking piece in his hand and ready to blow you away as he rolls down main street leaving you coughing blood. It’s not all bad! You’ve got a chopper to back you up, a mean, shiny street machine, some heavy metal hardware and some pretty neat moves. And what about the kingpin… did I say he was Mr. Big? No, he’s MR. BIG!

Overview & History

Released by Williams Electronics in 1988 and designed by Eugene Jarvis, NARC is a notoriously over-the-top, digitized-sprite run-and-gun arcade game that pushed political satire and graphic violence to unprecedented levels. Set in a gritty, fictional urban landscape, the storyline follows two hardcore narcotics officers, Max Force and Hit Man, whose sole mission is to dismantle an extensive, bizarre drug syndicate run by the criminal mastermind Mr. Big. Infamous for its explicit anti-drug public service announcements ("Winners don't use drugs!"), the game paradoxically revels in ultraviolence, letting players obliterate street-level thugs, drug-addled junkies, and mutant bosses with high-powered weaponry.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

NARC is famed for introducing intense, scaled sprite technology and digitized graphics that gave the characters a remarkably lifelike, stop-motion appearance. Players traverse horizontally scrolling stages populated by hostile pedestrians, leaping attack dogs, and relentless mobsters. The combat mechanics are brutally satisfying: you alternate between firing an automatic assault rifle and launching devastating surface-to-air missiles. Enemies don't just die—they explode into pixelated giblets, disintegrate into skeletons, or melt into smoking piles depending on the weapon used. Adding a unique layer of tactical cruelty, players can arrest surviving enemies rather than executing them, netting extra bonus points and intelligence. Throughout the chaos, players can also hop into a heavily armed Porsche-style squad car—the MACS mobile—to ruthlessly run down waves of syndicate members while dodging incoming RPG fire.
