Description

The master of stealth and the death-dealing art of Shuriken returns to avenge the murder of his friend Kato. The ultimate evil is Sauros, a crazed reptilian monster with the power to invoke cataclysmic catastrophes. His army of vicious ninja controls the city as he summons sudden firestorms, earthquakes and avalanches! Lizard henchmen guard terrified hostages that you must rescue. Dodge through the inferno! Hurl yourself across crumbling buildings. Conjure up total devastation with powerful ninja magic. Heave an onslaught of Death Stars – the last things the evil ones see! Shinobi’s fearless attack dog Yamato joins your race through danger. He combines the strength of three men, razor jaws, and the speed of a Shinobi Sabre. You’re Shadow Dancer. They’ve dishonored you. They die!

Shadow Dancer

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1989 for the System 16 hardware, Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi serves as the direct arcade sequel to the legendary 1987 hit Shinobi. Unlike its Mega Drive counterpart, which took a different narrative route, the arcade original reunites players with Joe Musashi (or a successor in the lineage). Set in a neo-futuristic New York City overrun by a mysterious terrorist syndicate hoarding nuclear warheads, your mission is to disarm bombs hidden across each stage and neutralize the rogue masterminds. Sega refined the hardware capabilities to deliver crisper sprite scaling, atmospheric sprawling cityscapes, and a brooding, synth-driven soundtrack that captures the gritty aesthetic of late-80s action cinema.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Departing slightly from its predecessor, Shadow Dancer introduces a revolutionary companion mechanic: a loyal canine sidekick named Yamato. This canine isn't just for show; players can command the dog to lunge and pin down formidable enemy bosses or shielded grunts, leaving them vulnerable to your katana. The game utilizes a demanding one-hit-kill health system, requiring absolute precision. Players wield a standard melee sword for close quarters, but upon collecting power-ups, attacks transform into devastating projectile shuriken. If cornered, players can unleash full-screen ninjutsu magic—such as summoning swirling tornadoes or lightning strikes—to wipe the screen clean of threats. Rescuing tied-up hostages scattered throughout the stages grants crucial bonus points and occasional power upgrades necessary to survive the punishing difficulty curve.
