Description

You control a shinobi, Joe Musashi, who must battle his way through each level in search of hostages which must be rescued. You have shurikens, kicks and punches to defend yourself with, as well as powerful ninja magic which can clear the screen of enemies in one go.

Each level is broken down into smaller scenes, and hostages are guarded by big blokes who throw swords. Watch out for gun-toting enemy henchmen and ninjas.

Shinobi

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1987, *Shinobi* is an iconic arcade platformer that defined the ninja action genre long before modern stealth games emerged. Developed by Rieko Kodama and her team, the game casts players as Joe Musashi, a legendary ninja warrior. The storyline revolves around a criminal syndicate called "Ring of Five," which has kidnapped the children of the master ninja's clan. Musashi embarks on a perilous, globe-trotting mission across five distinct, multi-staged missions to rescue the hostages and dismantle the evil organization. The game's distinct aesthetic blends traditional Japanese folklore with gritty 1980s urban decay and sci-fi technology, featuring adversaries ranging from modern street thugs and armed mercenaries to masked samurai, voodoo masters, and towering biomechanical boss monsters.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard side-scrollers, *Shinobi* utilizes a unique multi-tiered depth system allowing Joe Musashi to leap between foreground and background platforms. The core gameplay loop focuses on precise jumping, shuriken throwing, and close-quarters melee combat. When enemies approach from a distance, Musashi hurls a flurry of endless shurikens, but automatically transitions to devastating sword slashes or roundhouse kicks in close combat. A signature mechanic of the arcade original is the ability to rescue trapped hostages hidden throughout the stages; freeing them grants temporary power-ups, extra lives, or devastating magical ninjutsu arts. These cinematic magic spells—such as summoning fierce tornadoes, lightning storms, or transforming into a golden avatar—wipe the screen of enemies during particularly overwhelming boss encounters. The game is famously unforgiving, requiring strict memorization of enemy spawn patterns and flawless platforming precision.
