Description

You’re a brave bounty hunter pursuing outlaw scum like Simon Greedwell, Paco Loco, and Chief Scalpen. Each bad guy has a big reward on his head. And they’re helped by hordes of bandits, gunslingers and horse thieves, so pack loads of lead. Track those rotten skunks through an Indian village, on a steaming locomotive, and down the mean streets of lawless Reechforem Gulch. Occasionally, dynamite is at your disposal, as well as weapon power-ups. But cattle stampedes and sneaky traps could end your adventure in a cloud of dust. Oh, and be sure to carry ointment for your saddle sores because you’ll ride horseback in a galloping bonus stage filled with handy items. Ultimately, you must make villainous Sir Richard Rose eat sagebrush. Do so and you’ll have lots of money and the townsfolk kissing your boots.

Sunset Riders

Overview & History

Released by Konami in 1991 for arcade cabinets, Sunset Riders is a quintessential four-player cooperative run-and-gun side-scroller set in a vibrant, tongue-in-cheek Wild West. Infused with spaghetti-western flair, colorful sprites, and memorable digitized voice samples like "Bury me with my money," the game puts players in the boots of fearless bounty hunters tracking down the ruthless outlaw Sir Richard Rose and his four vile henchmen across cinematic frontier backdrops like saloons, train roofs, and burning towns.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players choose from four distinct protagonists: Steve and Billy, who wield classic dual six-shooters, or Bob and Cormano, who prefer devastating shotguns and wide-spread fan attacks. The core gameplay brilliantly combines traditional shooting mechanics with vertical platforming. As you blast through waves of desperados, you can leap between upper and lower levels, slide underneath enemy fire, and duck or jump off horses during high-speed chase sequences. Throughout the stages, players can collect crucial power-ups, including a rapid-fire bag of gold and dual-wield upgrades that double your firepower. Touching caged maidens grants bonus points and temporary invincibility, while each stage culminates in a chaotic boss battle against eccentric outlaws like Smith & Wesson, El Greco, and the final showdown with Sir Richard Rose.
