Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo

Overview & History

Released by Capcom in 1996 for the CP System II arcade hardware, Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo is a brilliantly frantic competitive puzzle game that cleverly parodies the company’s own fighting game catalog. Drawing heavy aesthetic inspiration from Darkstalkers and the Street Fighter Alpha series, the game transforms iconic martial artists, ninjas, and demons into chibi-style sprites who battle via gem-dropping puzzles. Rather than a traditional fighter, the arcade cabinet offered a head-to-head puzzle experience where clearing blocks directly dictated the physical combat playing out on the center of the screen, with characters executing signature moves, super combos, and comical defeat animations based on the puzzle board's state.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game revolves around matching falling pairs of colored "Normal Gems" with corresponding "Crash Gems" of the same color to clear them from your grid. Clearing gems sends corresponding "Counter Gems" to your opponent's board, which tick down before turning into regular blocks. A defining mechanic is the "Diamond Gem"—matching this wild item instantly eradicates all gems of that specific color across your entire board, triggering massive counter-attacks. As players clear blocks, the center animation shows their chosen character—such as Ryu, Morrigan, Chun-Li, or Hsien-Ko—performing iconic attacks like the Hadoken or Sonic Boom, culminating in devastating Super Combos that dump staggering amounts of garbage blocks onto the rival screen. The match ends when a player's gem stack reaches the top of the grid.
