Description

WWF WrestleMania: The Arcade Game merges the personalities and action of the WWF TV show characters with a Mortal Kombat-style fighting game. This title features digitized graphics of 8 WWF superstars: Doink, Razor Ramon, Bret “Hit Man” Hart, Shawn Michaels, The Undertaker, Yokozuna, Bam Bam Bigelow, and Lex Luger.

Although presented as a wrestling title, this game is structured like a one-on-one fighter, features over-the-top special moves characteristic of WWF. Each match is divided into a series of rounds, much like a fighting game. Instead of each round ending in a KO, it simply ends when the player forces the other wrestler(s) to fall by reducing their energy meter. Game modes include single player arcade mode, tournament mode, and versus mode for one-on-one multiplayer.

WWF Wrestlemania

Overview & History

Released by Midway in 1995, WWF WrestleMania (often subtitled The Arcade Game) threw realism out the window in favor of hyper-kinetic, over-the-top, digitized fighting action heavily inspired by Mortal Kombat. Developed by the same creative minds, the game ditched traditional grapple-heavy wrestling tropes for fast-paced, gravity-defying combos, bizarre projectile attacks, and cartoonish violence. The roster features eight iconic superstars of the mid-90s "New Generation" era: Bret "Hitman" Hart, The Undertaker, Shawn Michaels, Razor Ramon, Yokozuna, Bam Bam Bigelow, Doink the Clown, and Lex Luger. Players battle through grueling 1-on-1 or 2-on-2 handicap matches to capture the WWF Championship, accompanied by the legendary commentary of Vince McMahon and Jerry "The King" Lawler.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard wrestling titles, WWF WrestleMania operates strictly as a 2D fighting game. Wrestlers can execute frantic multi-hit combos, launch opponents into the ring ropes for rebound attacks, and leap off turnbuckles. The gameplay is defined by surreal, signature special moves: The Undertaker hurls ghostly skulls and summons lightning, Doink pulls out explosive mallets and joy buzzers, Razor Ramon fires psychic energy waves, and Bam Bam Bigelow leaves trails of fire. Wrestlers also exhibit comical damage states, such as shedding teeth, spitting blood, or swelling up after taking heavy strikes. Pinfalls only occur when an opponent's health bar is entirely depleted, shifting the focus entirely to aggressive offense and arcade-style mastery rather than mat wrestling psychology.
