The game stars the green-haired Joe and the blue-haired Mac, cavemen who battle through numerous prehistoric levels using weapons such as boomerangs, bones, fire, flints, electricity, stone wheels, and clubs. The objective of the game is to rescue a group of women who were kidnapped by a rival tribe of cavemen.

Released into arcades by Data East in 1991, Caveman Ninja (internationally known as Joe & Mac) is a vibrant, prehistoric side-scrolling platformer dripping with quirky humor and frantic co-op action. The storyline wastes no time setting up a goofy rescue mission: a rival caveman tribe storms a peaceful prehistoric village and kidnaps all the local cave-women. It is up to the titular green-haired hero Joe and blue-haired hero Mac to embark on a perilous, continent-spanning journey across the stone age. Players battle everything from saber-toothed tigers and pterodactyls to bizarre, primitive bosses armed with stone-age machinery. The game's distinct visual style, catchy tropical-themed soundtrack, and memorable character animations made it a standout hit in early '90s arcades, eventually spawning numerous home console ports while retaining its pure, unadulterated coin-op charm.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Caveman Ninja plays out across several colorful stages filled with verticality, destructible terrain, and hazard-laden environments ranging from deep jungles to volcanic wastelands. Players can choose to tackle the adventure solo or team up with a friend for simultaneous two-player mayhem. Unlike standard beat-'em-ups, Joe and Mac rely primarily on projectile combat. By default, they hurl short-range bone axes, stones, or boomerangs, but they can pick up power-ups that grant elemental attacks like fiery breath, electric boomerangs, or heavy stone wheels. A signature mechanic of the game is the charge attack: by holding down the attack button, players can power up a massive, high-damage projectile or wind up a devastating running headbutt. Additionally, players must manage a health meter represented by a stamina countdown, and collect scattered food items—ranging from giant steaks to cave-fish—to restore vitality and boost their score before facing the screen-filling, multi-phase boss encounters at the end of each level.
