Description

Choplifter is a side-scrolling action/arcade game that puts you in command of an attack chopper. Your mission: Go behind enemy lines and rescue up to 16 hostages per level. Be careful, though, because tanks and enemy aircraft will try to stop you – and they won’t stop shooting while you are rescuing those hostages!

Originally released for Apple II home computers, Choplifter was later ported to the arcades and a number of video game consoles. Many imitators and homages would follow.

Overview & History

Developed by Dan Gorlin and originally published by Brøderbund in 1982 for the Apple II before its triumphant 1985 arcade port by Sega, Choplifter is a pioneering side-scrolling action game that subverted traditional shoot-'em-up tropes. Instead of merely destroying every on-screen sprite, players pilot a heavily armed prototype helicopter on a humanitarian yet high-stakes rescue mission behind enemy lines. The arcade version elevated the 8-bit original with vibrant graphics, digitized rotor sound effects, and a tense time-limit mechanic that forced split-second tactical decisions. Set on a hostile island occupied by tank battalions and lethal anti-air defense systems, your objective is to infiltrate enemy territory, blow open prisoner-of-war barracks, airlift up to sixteen hostages to safety, and deposit them at a friendly helipad before running out of fuel or succumbing to enemy fire.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Choplifter divides its gameplay into alternating phases of aggressive combat and delicate aerial navigation. The helicopter can face left or right and tilt its nose to strafe ground targets while hovering stationary or cruising across the landscape. However, managing your momentum and facing direction is critical, as tilting forward to move leaves you vulnerable to incoming enemy jets and tank shells. Hostiles emerge relentlessly from underground bunkers: tanks roll across the terrain firing high-velocity shells, while nimble fighter jets streak across the sky dropping bombs. To rescue hostages, you must carefully land your chopper beside the blown-open barracks, wait for up to four captive soldiers to board your cargo bay, and take off without tipping the aircraft. Precision is everything; landing too hard or crushing escaping hostages results in immediate point penalties. Furthermore, enemy fire can damage your rotors or kill rescued hostages still waiting on the ground, adding immense psychological pressure to every sortie.
