Description

The objective of Dig Dug is to eliminate underground-dwelling monsters, either by inflating them with an air pump until they explode or by dropping rocks on them. There are two kinds of enemies in the game: “Pookas” (a race of cute round red monsters, said to be modeled after tomatoes, that wear yellow goggles) and “Fygars” (a race of green dragons that can breathe fire when their wings flash).

The player’s character is the eponymous Dig Dug, dressed in white and blue and able to dig tunnels through dirt. Dig Dug will be killed if he is caught by either a Pooka or a Fygar, burned by a Fygar’s fire, or crushed by a rock.

Dig Dug

Overview & History

Released by Namco in 1982, Dig Dug emerged as a defining pillar of the golden age of arcade gaming. Designed by Toshio Kai, the game introduced a whimsical yet tense strategic underground puzzle experience. Players step into the shoes of Taizo Hori, a white-suited explorer armed with a foot pump and a pneumatic drill, tasked with eradicating subterranean menaces. Unlike standard maze games, players actively carve their own subterranean tunnels through solid dirt, blending architectural strategy with arcade action.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core objective revolves around eliminating two subterranean species: the goggle-wearing Pooka and the fire-breathing, green-bodied Fygar. Players achieve victory either by inflating enemies with the foot pump until they burst or by crushing them with strategically dropped boulders. Digging horizontally causes overhead rocks to detach and plunge downward, squashing any pursuers caught in their path. Furthermore, enemies can temporarily morph into glowing, floating ghosts to traverse solid earth, directly pursuing Taizo through unmined dirt. As rounds progress, escaping to the top surface becomes a necessity, forcing remaining monsters to flee the screen and ending the stage.
