Sea Wolf was a video game update of an earlier coin-operated electro-mechanical (em) Midway game, Sea Devil, itself based on Sega’s 1966 coin-op electro-mechanical arcade submarine simulator Periscope.

Sea Wolf

Overview & History

Released by Midway in 1976, *Sea Wolf* stands as a monumental milestone in arcade history, pioneering the use of microprocessor hardware and establishing the periscope-based shooter genre. Designed by Dave Nutting, the game was heavily inspired by Sega's earlier electromechanical hit *Periscope*, but revolutionized the medium by transitioning from physical lights and cardboard waves to a digital cathode-ray tube display. It even served as the direct inspiration for Toshihiro Nishikado when he was conceptualizing *Space Invaders*. Encased in a distinctive wooden cabinet featuring an actual physical periscope viewfinder complete with rubber eye-cups, *Sea Wolf* immersed players in the tense atmosphere of submarine warfare during the Cold War era.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core objective of *Sea Wolf* is simple yet relentlessly fast-paced: players peer through the periscope and pilot a submerged submarine scanning the ocean surface. Across the horizon, enemy PT boats and warships traverse the screen from left to right at varying speeds. The screen displays a split-level view, with the upper half acting as the surface battlefield and the lower half displaying your torpedo countdown, remaining time, and current score. To score points, players must lead their targets, timing their torpedo shots to intercept the moving ships before time expires. Occasionally, a fast-moving destroyer appears, offering bonus points, while neutral mines pose a hazardous obstacle that, if struck, subtracts precious seconds from the game clock. The tension mounts as the timer ticks down, forcing split-second decisions and rapid-fire aiming in a desperate bid to earn extra game time.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Rotate the periscope aim left and right
  • Action Keys: Fire torpedo (Spacebar)
