Description

Cartoon-like toads, named Pimple, Zitz, and Rash, beat up rats and other mean critters on ther way to stopping the evil Dark Queen. Each toad has his own unique attacks and super-moves. A quarter-pumper with great sound and graphics.

You can choose from any of the three Toads: Rash a lean and fast fighter, Zitz a smart and balanced toad, or Pimple a big, bad powerhouse. Each has his own fighting style as well as his own repertoire of big-time Smash Hits that will be used to eliminate enemies. This game can appear to be just a beat-’em-up at first, but almost every level is different. Some levels are two and a half dimensional, like Double Dragon, and others are just two dimentional, giving you the ability to duck. One level has you hovering down a tunnel with a jet pack. On the last level, you ride in a hovering cruiser and fire at enemies with four different types of guns and a special weapon.

At various points in the stages, flies will appear. Just face them and attack, and your toad will snake out with his tongue and gobble them up to help regain lost health.

Battletoads

Overview & History

Released by Rare and distributed by Electronic Arts in 1994, the arcade iteration of Battletoads took the punishing difficulty and anthropomorphic brawler mechanics of the original NES classic and supercharged them into an over-the-top, coin-munching spectacle. Eschewing the home console's platforming focus, this arcade adaptation is a pure, unadulterated beat-'em-up designed to drain quarters through relentless hordes of space mutants, rats, and Psykopigs. Set against the nefarious machinations of the Dark Queen—who once again threatens the galaxy—rash, Zitz, and Pimple are recruited for a cosmic rescue mission. Unlike its 8-bit predecessor, the arcade version proudly embraced a mature tone, trading cartoonish tinks for hyper-violent, digitized gore, complete with tongue-in-cheek dismemberment and cinematic finishing moves that made it an unforgettable anomaly in arcades.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game supports up to three players simultaneously, allowing friends to pick Rash, Zitz, or Pimple, each boasting distinct physical profiles. Gameplay mechanics revolve around brutal melee combat across vertically and horizontally scrolling stages. The Toads retain their signature shape-shifting morph attacks: holding down the attack button charges up devastating finishers where their limbs transform into colossal spiked maces, steamrollers, axes, and jackhammers capable of flattening multiple enemies at once. Players can also rip off enemy limbs like pipes or bone clubs to use as melee weapons, grab and toss foes into the foreground or background, and execute frantic combo strings. Alongside standard brawling, the game features infamous vehicular stages, including the pulse-pounding turbo-bike chase viewed from a pseudo-3D perspective and hazard-laden descent sequences that test player reflex memory to the absolute limit.
