Description

Sindibad is a cute role playing game by IGS. You guide a warrior who seems to be travelling in the world of the Arabian nights. Ok, that was easy, the game title is Sinbad after all. The game offers an usual top view, where land but also cities and towns are displayed. Then, from now and then, the screens becomes black and change to fighting mode. A picture of your enemies appears for a round based fight. And as usual, they give you gold, experience and items when defeated. Sindibad is your usual Japanese role playing game, influenced like many others by Epix’s Dragon Quest series.

Sindibad: Chitei no Dai Makyuu

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan in 1990 by Victor Musical Industries for the PC Engine (known internationally as the TurboGrafx-16), Sindibad: Chitei no Dai Makyuu (Sindibad: The Great Underground Maze) is an obscure, highly atmospheric action-platformer. Loosely inspired by classic Arabian Nights folklore, the game drops players into the boots of the legendary sailor Sindibad, who must descend into treacherous subterranean labyrinths to rescue a captured princess from an evil sorcerer. While the TurboGrafx-16 library is celebrated for its shooters, this title showcases the hardware's capability for rich, colorful fantasy sprite-work and scaling effects, standing out as a hidden gem of early 16-bit exploratory platforming.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Gameplay blends traditional side-scrolling platforming with maze-like dungeon exploration, requiring players to collect keys, unlock heavy stone doors, and navigate shifting subterranean hazards. Sindibad is armed with a trusty scimitar for close-quarters melee combat against subterranean beasts, giant scorpions, and armored guards. Additionally, players can collect magical scrolls that unleash elemental projectile attacks, clearing the screen of clustered enemies. Levels are non-linear, featuring multiple vertical pathways, hidden rooms behind false walls, and treacherous platforming sequences over lava pits. Boss encounters at the end of each subterranean zone demand careful timing, pattern recognition, and precise use of Sindibad’s jump-and-slash maneuver to bypass defensive armor.
