Description

HuZERO is a futuristic racing game for the PC-Engine / Turbografx-16, which Was made as a tribute to a great Mode-7 racer on the Super Famicom. This version is a one-track “Summer Caravan” edition which, if you’re familiar with Hudson’s Caravans, gives you 2 minutes to attain a high score. And not die. The controls are quite simple. RUN starts and pauses the game, L/R steers, and the I button accelerates. It’s a futuristic jet-powered hovercraft levitating over a low-friction surface, and you have no brakes. (‘Cause I’m aiming for realism here…)
Try to survive 2 minutes, try to get a high score, and enjoy our little PC-Engine that could.

HuZERO

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan during the twilight years of the PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 era, HuZERO is an ambitious, cyberpunk-themed side-scrolling shoot-'em-up that pushed the console's HuCARD architecture to its absolute limits. Developed by a rogue team of former Hudson Soft veterans, the game was conceived as a gritty, technological antidote to the whimsical shooters dominating the platform. The storyline plunges players into the year 2184, where a rogue sentient mainframe known as 'ZERO' has corrupted the planetary defense grid, turning orbital colonies into floating mechanical graveyards. As ace pilot Koji Vane, you pilot the experimental H-01 interceptor into the heart of the digital anomaly to purge the rogue AI before it initiates absolute human erasure.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

HuZERO deviates from standard shmup conventions by incorporating dynamic gravity shifts and a dual-polarity weapon system. Players must constantly manage the Red and Blue core frequencies of their ship to absorb matching incoming enemy bullet hell patterns, converting absorbed energy into a screen-clearing 'Zero-Pulse' bomb. The game spans six grueling stages, each featuring sprawling, labyrinthine layouts that require precise memorization and split-second dodging. Character moves include an emergency dash maneuver for rapid spatial repositioning and a localized temporal slow-field that temporarily freezes fast-moving projectiles. Boss encounters are multi-phased endurance trials, forcing pilots to dismantle armored core components layer by layer while dodging relentless homing laser salvos.
