Description

A clone of the addictive Picross, Tongueman’s Logic presents you with a series of puzzle grids that have to be solved. Each grid has a set of numbers for the columns and rows, telling you how many black squares are there. By cross-referencing these numerical hints and using logic, you have to determine where in the grid they lie. You are able to place both black squares and ‘clear’ marks that help you keep track of squares that you know will be empty. There are 200 puzzles in total and as you progress the grid sizes get bigger and bigger, making the later ones quite challenging – given that you can only make a limited number of mistakes before it’s Game Over.

Tongueman's Logic

Overview & History

Released in 1993 exclusively in Japan for the PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 platform by Face, Tongueman's Logic (known natively as Tongueman no Bokan) is a delightfully bizarre and obscure puzzle-platformer. Obscured by the system's late-era niche status, it stands out for its surreal, fleshy aesthetic and deadpan humor. The storyline follows the titular Tongueman—a creature with a prehensile, whip-like tongue—navigating a series of fleshy, subterranean labyrinth-like dungeons to rescue his captured brethren from grotesque mechanical overlords. Unlike standard platformers of the era, progress relies entirely on spatial reasoning, tongue physics, and manipulating environmental hazards rather than pure speed or combat.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Gameplay revolves around Tongueman’s extraordinary appendage. Players must maneuver through tightly enclosed, single-screen or scrolling stages, using the tongue to grapple onto anchor points, pull heavy switches, reel in distant items, and whip bizarre biomechanical enemies. Movement is methodical and physics-driven; missing a grapple point or miscalculating the tongue's recoil sends Tongueman sliding dangerously into hazards. Character moves include a standard hop, a directional tongue-lash attack that doubles as a grappling hook, and a high-risk "slingshot pull" that launches Tongueman across chasms. Puzzles require players to feed specific items to ravenous wall-mouths, redirect toxic fluids, and solve logic gates using movable fleshy blocks.
