Genpei Toumaden

Overview & History

Developed by Namco and originally hitting Japanese arcades in 1986 before arriving on the PC Engine (TurboGrafx-16) in 1990, Genpei Toumaden is a darkly atmospheric hack-and-slash action game deeply rooted in Japanese folklore. The storyline casts players as Taira no Kagekiyo, a fallen Heike warrior resurrected from the underworld on a dark crusade to assassinate the treacherous Minamoto no Yoritomo and reclaim the imperial sword. The TurboGrafx-16 conversion brilliantly captured the eerie, mythic tone of the original coin-op, offering a fascinating window into Japan’s historic Genpei War filtered through a lens of supernatural horror and demonic mythology.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game breaks from traditional side-scrolling structures by seamlessly blending three distinct gameplay perspectives. Players navigate an overhead map to choose routes, which then drop Kagekiyo into side-scrolling stages featuring standard platforming, combat, and colossal giant-mode encounters against towering mythological deities. Kagekiyo’s arsenal is versatile: he can slash with his heavy katana, crouch-stab subterranean enemies, and leap across treacherous chasms. Additionally, players can collect souls to unleash devastating spell attacks. Kagekiyo controls with a weighty, deliberate momentum, forcing players to master precise spacing and timing against fast-spawning demons, phantom samurai, and grotesque mythical beasts. The inclusion of vertically scrolling underground mazes further diversifies the quest, demanding careful navigation through light-deprived corridors. Between stages, Kagekiyo visits shrines to answer riddles from Buddhist deities like Benzaiten and Bishamon, earning vital power-ups and expanding his spiritual strength for the harrowing trials ahead.
