Rampart

Overview & History

Originally a coin-op arcade phenomenon by Tengen, *Rampart* made its way to the Sega Master System in 1992, courtesy of Sega's European division. While most 8-bit conversions suffered severe downgrades, this port brilliantly adapts arcade strategy into the living room. Set against medieval naval warfare, the storyline casts the player as a commander defending castle strongholds against relentless fleets of invading galleons. Without a traditional narrative or playable character sprites, the game's drama emerges from pure logistical panic, blending chaotic artillery combat with rapid spatial puzzle-solving across escalating medieval campaigns.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Rampart’s core loop is divided into three distinct, high-pressure phases: Naval Combat, Castle Repair, and Cannon Placement. During the combat phase, players take direct control of coastal cannons to blast approaching pirate ships, watching as wooden hulls splinter and sink beneath the waves. Once the timer expires, the game shifts to the Tetris-esque repair phase. Players receive randomly shaped stone wall pieces that must be rotated and positioned on a grid to enclose their remaining castles. Any disconnected territory is instantly demolished, leaving the keep exposed. Successfully enclosing a castle awards the player extra cannons for the next round. Surviving all three rounds across multiple maps leads to ultimate victory, though subsequent stages introduce menacing dreadnoughts and swirling whirlpools that disrupt both artillery targeting and wall placement.
