Description

Super Boy 4 is the fourth and supposedly final game in the Super Boy series by Zemina. Super Boy 4 again changes Super Boy’s design, this time not being based off of Mario. The graphics, however, are still ripped from Super Mario World but with reduced color depth due to the Master System’s technical limitations. Despite this, they are an improvement on Super Boy 3’s due to the Master System having better graphical capabilities than the MSX or SG-1000. All sound effects and some of the songs are recycled from Super Boy 3. The game’s items, unlike the first three games, are not randomized.

Super Boy IV

Overview & History

Released deep into the twilight era of the Sega Master System, Super Boy IV stands as one of the platform's most fascinating unlicensed software oddities. Developed primarily for the Asian and South American markets where Sega's 8-bit hardware enjoyed extended longevity, this platformer boldly attempts to capture the magic of premier mascot adventures. The storyline casts players as the titular hero, a plucky caped protagonist on a quest to rescue his kidnapped companions from an enigmatic, high-tech syndicate known as the Shadow Core. Far from a simple asset flip, the game pushes the Master System's Z80 processor and VDP graphics chip to their limits, featuring surprisingly colorful sprites, parallax scrolling in later stages, and a catchy, driving chiptune soundtrack that elevates the surreal atmosphere.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Spanning multiple distinct biomes—ranging from neon-lit cyberpunk cityscapes to ancient, trap-laden ruins—Super Boy IV relies on precise, momentum-driven platforming. The titular hero commands a robust moveset: beyond the standard running and jumping, he can execute a devastating downward boot-stomp to shatter cracked blocks and squash resilient enemies. Throughout the linear stages, players collect glowing energy orbs that function as both health and currency, allowing the protagonist to unleash long-range projectile attacks once his power meter maxes out. Hidden rooms, vertical ascension sequences, and deviously placed hazards demand fast reflexes and trial-and-error mastery reminiscent of classic 8-bit side-scrollers, culminating in multi-tiered boss fights that test every ounce of acquired skill.
