Description

An attempt at recreating the classic Atari800/C64/Spectrum game “Bruce Lee” for the Master System.

Collect the lamps and fight Green Yamo and the Ninja!

Bruce Lee

Overview & History

Originally coded by Ronny Westphal for the MSX and Commodore 64 in 1984 by Datasoft, Bruce Lee made its way to the Sega Master System via a 1989 Korean port published by Samsung as The Dragon: Bruce Lee (and later under license in select PAL regions). This 8-bit conversion blends cinematic platforming with single-screen martial arts brawling, Tasking you with embodying the legendary dragon himself to infiltrate the treacherous underground lair of the evil wizard Yamo and rescue the captured Green Ninja.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard linear side-scrollers, the Master System version maps out a non-linear network of over 20 single-screen flip-screen chambers. You must scale ropes, leap across deadly electrical barriers, and scale crumbling ledges while dodging relentless pursuit from two unique adversaries: the heavy-hitting green sumo wrestler Yamo and the agile, sword-wielding ninja. Combat is deceptively strategic; rather than relying purely on frantic button-mashing, you must time your flying kicks, sweeping low punches, and rapid jabs to overcome the distinct health pools and AI patterns of your pursuers. Collecting glowing lanterns scattered across each room gradually opens the ultimate exit leading to Yamo’s inner sanctum. The Master System iteration enhances the original home computer versions with sharper color palettes, crisp sprite scaling, and a driving 8-bit chiptune soundtrack that amplifies the frantic pacing of the arcade-style action.
