Description

A port of the Famicom game Shin Jinrui: The New Type (Adventures of Dino Riki in the US), which apparently gave Zemina opportunity to exploit their vertical shmup code even once more. Typically, the scrolling is choppy here, too. There have been several other small compromises, but overall Wonsiin is a decent port of the Knightmare inspired game. Especially some elements that one would think would have been sacrificed on the MSX, most impressively the attacking dinosaur skeletons, are intact. Still, Wonsiin ends after three stages, leaving out the final challenges.

Wonsiin

Overview & History

Released exclusively in South Korea for the Sega Master System by Samsung in 1993, Wonsiin (often translated contextually as "The Original") is a rare platforming gem that adapts Korean folklore and mythology into an 8-bit digital format. Long overlooked by Western audiences during the height of the 16-bit console wars, this title represents a fascinating era of regional software localization and development, showcasing how the Master System hardware continued to receive unique, high-effort software updates in Asian markets long after its commercial twilight in North America. The game follows the mystical journey of a youthful shaman-warrior tasked with traversing spirit realms, ancient temples, and enchanted forests to banish malevolent yokai and restore cosmic balance to the mortal plane.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Wonsiin operates as a fast-paced, side-scrolling action-platformer that demands precise timing and strategic resource management. Players navigate through six distinct, multi-tiered stages filled with environmental hazards, bottomless pits, and aggressive mythological beasts. Unlike typical platform heroes of the era, the protagonist wields a magical spiritual staff that can be charged for devastating area-of-effect elemental blasts, as well as utilized for standard melee strikes against encroaching ghouls. Exploration is heavily rewarded; hidden alcoves contain ancient talismans and glowing orbs that upgrade the player's health pool, extend jump floatiness, and alter the elemental property of their basic attack to bypass specific enemy armor types. Boss encounters at the end of each stage require pattern recognition and careful evasion of screen-filling projectiles, embodying the classic, unforgiving difficulty curve characteristic of late-generation 8-bit Sega hardware.
