Comic Bakery

Overview & History

Originally developed by Konami as an arcade and MSX hit in 1984, Comic Bakery found new life when ported to the Sega Master System (known as the SG-1000 in Japan). Distinct from the typical shoot-'em-ups and platformers dominating the 8-bit era, this whimsical title tasks players with running a bustling, cartoonish bakery. The storyline centers on a frantic baker attempting to fulfill an endless stream of customized bread and pastry orders while fending off an army of mischievous, thieving forest animals—including clever foxes, sneaky rats, and flying pests—who are determined to steal the dough right off the conveyor belt. Rather than relying on combat, the game presents a frantic puzzle-action challenge where time management and spatial awareness are your only paths to survival.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Gameplay takes place across a single-screen layout featuring a multi-tier conveyor belt system. Raw dough pieces emerge from a hopper, and you must guide your baker to catch them, carry them to specific kneading tables, slide them into the oven at the precise moment, and finally box them up before they burn or get snatched by critters. The mechanics require constant multitasking; if an animal gets too close to your ingredients, you must whack them away using your trusty baker's peel. As you progress through stages, the conveyor belts speed up, the baking times become tighter, and the pests multiply, demanding lightning-fast reflexes and flawless route planning to achieve a high score.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Move the baker left and right across platforms, and climb ladders
  • Action Keys: Pick up/drop dough, slide items into ovens, and swing your peel to repel animals
  • Enter: Start / Pause
