Hong Kil Dong

Overview & History

Released exclusively in South Korea in 1990 by Zemina for the Sega Master System, Hong Kil Dong is a culturally significant platformer based on Korea's most famous folklore hero—a Joseon-dynasty nobleman's illegitimate son who became a Robin Hood-like bandit leader fighting corrupt aristocrats. While Sega's 8-bit console struggled globally against Nintendo, local developers like Zemina kept the hardware alive in Korea through localized titles. This game adapts the legendary martial artist's adventures into a side-scrolling action format, offering a fascinating glimpse into early Korean video game development.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players navigate Hong Kil Dong through horizontally scrolling stages populated by corrupt officials, rival martial artists, and mythical Korean beasts. Unlike standard linear platformers, the game incorporates RPG-lite elements: players collect scattered coins and magical scrolls to upgrade Hong's combat stats and weapon power. The protagonist utilizes traditional Korean martial arts and can briefly summon mystical clones of himself to confuse enemies—a nod to his legendary Taoist powers from the original novel. Boss battles at the end of each zone require precise timing to dodge sweeping polearm attacks and counter-strike during vulnerable frames.
