Description
Nemesis for the Sega Master System is an MSX port, which was converted without a license and released in South Korea by Zemina in 1987. This version of the game is identical to the MSX version, running in the graphics mode intended for SG-1000 backwards compatibility. As a result the gameplay is significantly more choppy than its arcade counterpart, and the graphics do not take advantage of the Master System hardware.
Nemesis
Overview & History
Released by Sega in 1987 exclusively for the Master System, Nemesis is a port of Konami's legendary arcade shoot-'em-up, famously known as Gradius. While the MSX and NES ports received broader fame, the Master System adaptation stands out for its unique graphical adjustments, rearranged audio, and the inclusion of exclusive bonus stages not found in the original coin-op. Set in the distant future, the storyline casts you as the pilot of the sub-etheric spacecraft *Vic Viper*, launched on a desperate, one-ship suicide mission to annihilate the biological mechanoid armies of the Bacterion Empire before they consume the peaceful planet Gradius. Operating under severe hardware constraints, Sega’s development team managed to capture the atmospheric tension of the arcade original, delivering an intense, sci-fi gauntlet that tested the reflexes of 8-bit gamers worldwide.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
Nemesis utilizes the iconic Gradius power-up matrix, forcing players to adapt their strategy on the fly. As you destroy red enemy formations, they drop power capsules that light up a meter at the bottom of the screen. Clicking the activation button at the right moment lets you choose upgrades: Speed Up, Missiles, Double, Laser, Option (which creates up to two trailing clone drones mirroring your shots), and a localized Force Field shield. The game consists of seven diverse, horizontally scrolling stages—ranging from the biological labyrinth of the amoeba zone to the crumbling statues of the Moai temple. Memorization of enemy wave spawn points and precise boss weak-point targeting are mandatory for survival, as death strips the Vic Viper of all accumulated upgrades, leaving you catastrophically vulnerable in later levels.
Keyboard Controls
- Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Move the Vic Viper up, down, left, and right across the screen
- Action Keys: Fire main weapon / Activate selected power-up from the bottom meter
- Enter: Start / Pause the game
