Description

This version is also based on the original MSX1 classic. For some reason the game always run in “Penguin mode” which was originally unlocked by plugging a Penguin Adventure cartridge in the second cartridge slot of a MSX. This could be an intentional modification that Zemina made, or perhaps a side-effect of the game reading unexpected data and interpreting it as Penguin Adventure.

Nemesis 2

Overview & History

Released exclusively in PAL territories for the Sega Master System in 1987 by Konami (known regionally as *Gradius 2*, though differing significantly from its arcade namesake), Nemesis 2 is a masterpiece of 8-bit vertical-scrolling shoot-'em-up design. Following the events of the original title, player pilot James Burton must once again board the iconic Vic Viper starfighter to penetrate the organic stronghold of the Bacterian Empire and eradicate the alien menace once and for all. Konami pushed the Master System's hardware to its absolute limits, delivering crisp scrolling backgrounds, vibrant color palettes, and a mesmerizing space-opera soundtrack that made this cartridge a legendary collector's item for retro enthusiasts.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard horizontal shooters of its era, Nemesis 2 introduces a revolutionary vertical orientation combined with Konami's signature Power Meter upgrade system. As players destroy waves of biological and mechanical foes, they collect red energy capsules that illuminate slots on the bottom HUD, allowing real-time tactical customization. Players can strategically choose when to activate upgrades ranging from Speed Up and Missiles to Double Cannons, the devastating Laser, defensive Options (phantom companion drones), and the emergency Force Field. Across multi-layered alien hives, shifting asteroid belts, and treacherous biomechanical fortresses, players must anticipate fierce boss encounters at the end of each sector, requiring absolute precision, pattern memorization, and expert positioning.
