Overview & History

Originally a hit Konami arcade game released in 1982, *Pooyan* made its way to home consoles, including a notable conversion for the Sega Master System. The storyline is a charmingly bizarre fable starring Mama Pig (referred to in some materials as Poo), whose peaceful forest home is threatened by an organized syndicate of malicious, balloon-riding wolves. Tasked with rescuing her captured piglets, Mama Pig operates a mechanical pulley system mounted on the side of a steep cliff. While the Master System version faced stiff competition from Nintendo's dominant NES and arcade ports, it stands out for its colorful graphics, cheerful chiptune soundtrack featuring adapted classical melodies, and a uniquely structured multi-phase level design that differentiates it from standard fixed-screen shooters of the era.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay is split into two distinct, alternating stages across multiple rounds. In the first stage, Mama Pig rides her elevator up and down the cliff face, using a bow and arrow to pop the balloons of descending wolves. Each wolf carries either one or two balloons; popping them causes the villains to plummet, though some can land safely on treetops or use umbrellas if not dropped from a sufficient height. If too many wolves reach the bottom and climb the rope, they knock Mama Pig off. In the second stage, the dynamic reverses: the wolves have swarmed to the top of the cliff and are trying to push a massive boulder down to crush the elevator, while Mama Pig must defend herself by hurling large chunks of meat upwards to feed and neutralize them before they can trigger the boulder. Precision timing, managing the vertical trajectory of arrows, and prioritizing wolves carrying rocks or fruit add surprising depth to this deceptively cute title.
