Weka Invaders

Overview & History

Released exclusively in PAL territories during the twilight years of the Sega Master System in 1994, Weka Invaders is a quirky, cult-classic side-scrolling platformer developed by Sega's European division. The storyline centers around an ecological crisis in the lush valleys of New Zealand, where a swarm of mechanical, cybernetic apex predators known as the Weka Invaders—led by the metallic overlord Mech-Moa—have invaded to strip-mine the indigenous flora. Players control Kiri, a nimble eco-warrior armed with a modified seed-launcher, tasked with navigating treacherous volcanic caverns, dense rainforests, and floating skyscapes to dismantle the robotic menace. Due to its late release cycle, physical cartridges are exceptionally rare today, making it a prized possession for retro collectors.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Weka Invaders blends traditional run-and-gun mechanics with vertical exploration. Kiri can jump, duck, and charge her seed-launcher to unleash heavy-damage spore bombs against mechanical fauna. Unique to this title is the "Vine-Grapple" mechanic, allowing players to latch onto overhead canopy nodes to swing across bottomless chasms and reach hidden alcoves. Power-ups scattered throughout the levels include the "Fern Shield," which grants temporary invulnerability, and the "Turbo-Sprocket," which increases firing speed. Featuring five distinct worlds with multiple checkpoints, the game demands precise timing, especially during frantic vertical-scrolling boss fights where Kiri must outclimb rising pools of molten geothermal sludge.
