Desert Speedtrap starring Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote

Overview & History

Released late in the Sega Master System's lifespan in 1993—primarily targeting European and Brazilian markets where the 8-bit console maintained immense popularity long after the Genesis dominated—Desert Speedtrap is a licensed platformer developed by Probe Software and published by Sega. Based on the iconic theatrical cartoons, the game captures the timeless, chaotic rivalry of Warner Bros.' ultimate predator and prey. Wile E. Coyote, ever desperate for a meal, hatches yet another convoluted scheme involving ACME contraptions, while the perpetually smug Road Runner simply wants to traverse the desert unbothered, leaving a trail of "Beep! Beep!" behind. Unlike its predecessor, this title leans heavily into momentum-based platforming across distinct desert-themed stages filled with hazards, hidden items, and environmental traps.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players control the ultra-fast Road Runner across side-scrolling terrain littered with classic cartoon gags, ACME crates, and treacherous ledges. The primary objective is to reach the end of each zone while collecting birdseed to maintain health and score. Along the way, players must dodge Wile E. Coyote’s recurring traps—ranging from poorly placed TNT boxes to falling boulders and giant magnets. Unlike typical platformers where you defeat enemies, the Road Runner relies purely on evasion and speed, using a dedicated dash mechanic to clear massive chasms. Between levels, players experience frantic mini-game sequences where Wile E. Coyote pursues our hero on various doomed vehicles like pogo sticks, rockets, and roller skates. The visual design brilliantly mimics the Chuck Jones cartoons, featuring expressive sprite animations and vibrant, sun-baked desert backgrounds that push the Master System hardware to its limits.
