A NEW Sega arcade hit comes to life on the Sega System!

You’re Jo-Mushashi, a mild-mannered martial arts instructor. But you have another job as well. When duty calls, you’re a Master Ninja! YOUR MISSION: An evil terrorist network, the Ring of Fire, has kidnapped the children of the world’s leaders! You must get the hostages back…and defeat the Ring of Fire!

They’re waiting for you with gunmen, thugs, mongos and green ninjas. But you alone have the power of Ninja Magic!

It’s arcade-like action…only from Sega!

Shinobi

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1987 for the Master System, Shinobi is a seminal 8-bit side-scrolling action platformer that translates the gritty, arcade ninja fantasy into home consoles. Developed as a direct response to the massive success of arcade beat-'ups and ninja tropes of the era, the Master System iteration was actually handled personally by Sega rather than being a strict port, resulting in unique level layouts and a distinct progression system compared to its coin-op counterpart. Players step into the traditional garb of Joe Musashi, a master ninja tasked with infiltrating the criminal syndicate "Ring of Ninja" to rescue the kidnapped children of the fierce Oboro clan. Spanning five distinct, highly atmospheric missions—ranging from industrial docks to cavernous temple hideouts—the game requires meticulous timing, sharp reflexes, and strategic deployment of both martial arts and ancient mysticism.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard platformers where avoiding enemies is the primary goal, Shinobi demands total crowd control. Joe Musashi is armed with a dual-purpose attack system: he hurls rapid-fire shuriken at a distance, but automatically switches to a devastating close-quarters katana slash or roundhouse kick when foes approach melee range. Each of the game's five missions is broken down into three distinct sub-stages, where Joe must rescue a specific number of bound, heavily guarded hostages. Successfully freeing every captive in a stage triggers a crucial reward: temporary upgrades to more lethal, screen-clearing weapons like throwing knives or a powerful gun. Furthermore, at the end of every third sub-stage, players face a tense, cinematic bonus round viewed from a first-person perspective, tossing shuriken at advancing waves of enemy ninja to earn extra lives and powerful magic spells. These ancient ninjutsu arts—including the iconic Ikazuchi lightning shield, time-freeze, and massive elemental screen-wipes—can be activated once per level to turn the tide against relentless boss encounters like the floating mask Mandara or the electrifying Black Turtle.
